The Beaux-Arts style was influenced by ancient Greece and Rome to establish a national identity for France. Classical motifs were used with additional decorative elements added that would steer the style away from its classical origins. Comparing the Palais Garnier in Paris to the Pantheon they both exhibit post and lintel construction, symmetry, and an engraved entablature. The Palais Garnier is different from the Pantheon because of the significant ornamentation that has been added to the classical bones. This includes lots of gold, festoons, as well as the oeil-de-bouf. There is also a heavier first floor.
