To describe the Beaux-Arts style I will be comparing The Palais Garnier with St. Peter’s Basilica, a building of Renaissance architecture. Both buildings have large domes on top with ornamentation at the peak of the dome. Noticeably, the Palais Garnier has a metal dome, which is emblematic of the Beaux-Art style as metalwork became feasible building material. The gold accents on the Palais Garnier are also significant, as the Beaux-Arts style often used gold accents in their buildings. Although pilasters are used in both works, the Beaux-Arts style employed them more liberally than the Renaissance architecture did. The Palais Garnier also has much more extravagant ornamentation than the Renaissance building, as Beaux-Arts styled buildings were often very eclectic.
