Week 9 Response

The Beaux-Arts is in many ways similar to or of the same idea as the Baroque. Contrasting the Palais Garnier with a Rocco work, such as the Winter Palace, can bring the distinctions to light. While both buildings employ heavy ornamentation, gilding, and a more prominent first floor, there are also many differences. As a Beaux-Arts work the Palais Garnier makes ample use of sculptural elements which the Winter Palace uses much more sparingly. The Palais Garnier is also lacking in the distinct sense of rhythm found in the repetitious elements of Baroque buildings, and exemplified in the Winter palace.
